When you want your websites to appear within the first set of search engine results, like Google, there are a set of standard rules and parameters you should follow in order to improve the Page Ranking of each of your site pages. A bulk of these rules involve the basic layout of your site, the position of the words on your site that your would anticipate as those of importance, and the repetition of words and phrases that your desire search engines to identify.

While it is indeed important to provide search engines with a decent amount of site text, generally referred to as 'copy', it is of even greater importance that the keywords and descriptions you specify for your site change from page to page. Introducing variety into these tags not only improves the general indexing of the site, but also makes your page content more relevant to the keywords and description. What does this all mean?

Words that appear in your keyword list but fail to occur in the page content are ignored in some search engines, and in others provide a negative reflection on your page relevance. Websites that use a generic description, and list of keywords for an entire site, reduces the chances that a bulk of the keywords and terms used in the description will be repeated in the visible page text. The more frequently a word appears in your page keyword list, but fails to occur within the page content, decreases the overall effectiveness of that word, and reduces your chances of consideration within a search query.

With this said, DotNetNuke provides inherent capabilities to control not only the overall site description and keyword list, but also custom descriptions and keyword lists for each of your pages. It is not just important to implement these changes whenever possible, but in many cases vital.

Overall Settings

Changing the overall site description and keywords is simple. Log in to your site as an Administrator. Through the Admin menu, click on Site Settings. Fill in the Description and Keywords under the Basic Settings / Site Details .

Page Settings

To control the Description and Keywords on a page by page level, go to each of your pages. Open the Page Settings, and fill in the Description and Keywords in the Basic Settings / Page Details section.

Finally, when you have completed your entire site, you should Submit the Page to Google. It is important to wait until a good portion of your site is ready for indexing, because the pages are indexed and ranked as a combination of one another, as well as separately, and your overall site is just as important as each page on its own.

Nuke Safely.
